  • What is Urban Potential Laboratories (UP Labs)?

    UP Labs is a 14-week program that prepares non-traditional students with high school diplomas, but less than bachelor's degrees, for careers in the healthcare industry.

    Fall orientation takes place at the start of August. Classes take place Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Stay tuned for Spring dates!

  • What kind of things will I learn?

    Students learn topics in clinical and administrative healthcare, like medical terminology, medical office procedures, general healthcare administration, healthcare assistant duties, and coaching for entry-level healthcare professionals.     Students will learn through classes taught by FIU Professors and Life Coaches and on-the-job training opportunities at local hospitals.

  • What kind of experience or credentials do I need? What are the requirements?

    UP Labs does not require any prior medical or healthcare experience or college/university degree. Students must have a high school diploma or GED and cannot have a bachelor's degree.

    Those interested in participating must meet the following requirements:

    • 18+ years old
    • Household income under $52,300
    • High School Diploma/GED
    • Less than a bachelor's degree
    • Fully commit to a 14-week program
  • Do I have to be a Florida resident to apply?
    No. We encourage anyone living in the United States to apply, not just Florida residents. However, in-person events such as testing days and training sessions are mandatory for all students and take place at FIU in Miami, FL.
  • What is the cost of the program for students?
    There is ZERO cost for UP Labs students. We require commitment and motivation!
  • Where do classes take place?

    Our classes take place remotely through Zoom. There are a few in-person events scheduled throughout each term, including 3 training sessions at FIU, 1 tour of the Miami Dade College Medical Campus, 2 testing sessions at FIU, and the graduation ceremony held at FIU. 

    Our virtual classes are administered live through Zoom by FIU professors and instructors from local hospitals. Through the virtual classes, students are able to ask questions, participate, and communicate with each other and the instructors. 

  • What language are the classes taught in?
    Our classes are taught completely in English.
  • I have been out of the workforce for many years. Can I still join UP Labs?
    Yes! We encourage anyone who is interested in the healthcare industry to apply to our program, regardless of previous experience.
  • I work full time. Is the program flexible?
    Yes! Our class schedule was designed with working individuals in mind. Classes take place Mondays - Fridays after work hours, from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., for 14 weeks.
  • Can I receive college credit by participating in UP Labs?
    Yes! Through our reverse articulation partnership with Miami Dade College, UP Labs students earn college credits that can be used at Miami Dade College.
  • What kind of certificate do I receive at the end of the program?
    Learners will receive a UP Labs Health Program Certificate of Completion and CEU's (Professional Credit Hours) from FIU's Continuing Education Department. In addition, learners will end the program with First Aid, CPR and AED Certifications.
  • Is a job guaranteed upon completion of the program?
    No, jobs are not guaranteed at the end of the program. However, UP Labs provides a 2-4 week job shadowing opportunity at local hospitals. Through job shadowing, students will have the opportunity to network and make connections that will aid them in their job search.
